Maintenance Man Ellis Continues His Apprenticeship

Ellis Smith, a trailblazer within HPP has celebrated a significant milestone in his career development transformation, successfully obtaining his Level 2 Maintenance and Operations Engineering. At 34, he not only stands out as the company's oldest apprentice but also as an inspiration for those considering a career change at any age.

Ellis, who previously worked as Production Planning administrator, successfully transitioned to the Maintenance team back in 2023 and is now working towards the next stage of his apprenticeship journey. The completion of his Level 2 qualifications paves the way for him to move forward and pursue his Level 3 certification over the next two years.

After serving four years in the Royal Engineers, Ellis joined HPP way back in 2014. He has positive memories of his time in the army: "The army trains you in a trade, but you don't come away with a formal qualification, which is why doing the apprenticeships is so good. But thanks to what I learned in the army, I'm being trusted to do jobs that someone so new to the team probably wouldn't be doing."

As a part of the apprenticeship program, Ellis has engaged in a variety of hands-on tasks, including the installation, testing and maintenance of HPP's diverse range of equipment. His time in the army's Royal Engineers has equipped him with valuable practical skills, which he now successfully applies to his role.

Reflecting on his Level 2 completion, Ellis expressed his enthusiasm for the progress he's made: "It's been a fantastic journey so far, and I'm thrilled to reach Level 3. Each day presents new learning opportunities, and I am eager to increase my knowledge and skills. The apprenticeship has provided me with the formal qualifications I was after, which will be beneficial for both my personal development and career as well as HPP."

HPP's management team has shown strong support for Ellis's apprenticeship journey. Dan Mounsey, HPP's Marketing and Business Development director, commented, "Ellis is a perfect example of how apprenticeships can adapt to the evolving workforce. His army background, combined with a skilled apprenticeship, is not only beneficial for his development but also enhances the entire business. We are proud to support his growth."

As HPP continues to invest in its apprenticeship program, the company remains focused on developing talent from all walks of life and showcasing that it's never too late to pursue a new path. Ellis's success story reinforces the HPP ethos that lifelong learning and career development are essential elements in today's dynamic work environment.
